Sharing Spaces for Health is a part of the Childhood Obesity Initiative, originally funded by the Healthcare Georgia Foundation and supported by Cobb2020. The goal of this initiative is to offer more quality opportunities for physical activity in order to reverse the trend of childhood obesity in Cobb County.
Sharing Spaces encourages community partners to offer public access to their facilities so that kids, teens and their families can get more physically active in their own neighborhoods. Our partners include schools, faith-based organizations, businesses and nonprofits that open all or part of their indoor or outdoor health facilities, such as gyms, parks, greenspace and more, free of charge or significantly discounted to the community.
Why Does This Matter?
Childhood obesity is a nationwide epidemic, with over 900,000 children in Georgia alone reported as being overweight or obese. If not addressed, this problem puts children at risk for cardiovascular disease, certain cancers, pre-diabetes, and more health problems later in life. By helping to provide safe, accessible and affordable places to exercise and play, Sharing Spaces for Health and its partners can help reduce the obesity rate in our community and facilitate healthier habits. The program invites schools, faith-based organizations, businesses and nonprofits to open all or part of their facilities so that together we can create new opportunities to be physically active. The concept is simple and powerful: let’s share resources to get our communities healthier and reverse the alarming rate of childhood obesity.

Become a Sharing Spaces Partner
We are in need of more organizations and businesses to support our efforts and become a Sharing Spaces partner. If your organization has a basketball court, athletic field, pool, playground, weight room, track or other facilities, and you are willing to share that space with the community to improve our overall health, sign up to be a Sharing Spaces partner!
- Flexibility! You choose the indoor and/or outdoor space and specify what hours it will be open to the community.
- Free signage showing that you are a Sharing Spaces partner and dedicated to fighting childhood obesity.
- Promotion via a press release to local media announcing the partnership and your support of Sharing Spaces.
- Recognition on www.Cobb2020.com.
- Program content for your own use—share the importance of the message and your involvement on your own website, newsletters and on social media.
- Exposure of your organization and its mission to more community members.
Our partners participate via an open declaration allowing the public to use your facilities’ indoor and/or outdoor areas at designated times. The partners listed above have signed open declarations. Another way to participate as a Sharing Spaces partner is via a joint-use agreement. This acts as a memorandum between two or more entities to share an indoor or outdoor space for free or at a low cost. In this case, partners, such as a school, government facility, church or private organization, share amongst each other a space like a gymnasium, field or playground.
If your facility would be willing to support our efforts to promote physical activity in the Cobb community, please contact us at firstname.lastname@example.org today and help us fight childhood obesity.
